5 ideas for a PERFECT DAY in Bern

Bern is a must-see city in Switzerland. Not only because it is the capital-city, but also because it is one of the most wonderful places to visit in Switzerland.

Here is my list of 5 things to do in Bern! The order is not mandatory, but the visit to Bern is!! Read the article and at the end you will also discover a movie with Bern's most beautiful places.

1. Enjoy the views from the Bern's bridges

The river Aare passes through Bern. In ancient times the city did not pass the river, but in the last 200 years several bridges have been built over the river thus letting the town to grow. But they offer stunning views of the city. So, for exemple, go to the bridge that is near the casino. You will see the entrance intro Bern Old City, the House of Parliament, Bern Munster Cathedral. From the bridge you will also enjoy a great view of the river Aare and of a restaurant that is just below the Bridge (Schwellenmatelli).

2. Visit Bern's famous cathedral, Munster, and climb to the tower

Munster Cathedral is a real masterpice being one of Switzerland's largest cathedrals. The tower has 344 steps, it is 100 meters high and is the highest church tower from the country. From up above you will be able to see the whole Bern and all the mountains that surround the city. The view is magnificent.
The entrance to the tower is 5 CHF and there is no fee to visit the cathedral.

3. Walk around Bern's Old City

It is one the most beautiful Old Cities that I have ever seen. It is just lovely. Don't especially search for famous places, just walk and keep your eyes and your heart open. Go to every little street to the left or to the right. Discover it. Thus you will not miss the Clock Tower (Zytglogge), Munster cathedral, the house where Einstein lived and developed the theory of relativity, the Prison Tower, the famous colored statues and so on. The old city is full of restaurants, coffee places and many, many shops. You could spend days and days here.
A special mention about the Clock Tower: try to reach it at .00, that is 10.00, 11.00 and so on. All the statues from the clock are moving!!!

4. Walk around the city

Bern is not just the Old City. Cross the bridges and you will discover a lovely and quiet city. Full of nice old house, flowers, trees, little restaurants, parks. So rent a bike and go for an hour or two in the city, away from the touristic places. There you will discouver the soul of the city.

5. Eating and parking in Bern

As everywhere in Switzerland this is a cost problem. You already know that eating and parking are expensive, but there are ways.
So if you are on a budget and want to eat well in Bern Old City do not go to the McDonald's. Just 100m from it there is a Migros Take-Away. It has hundreds of sandwiches, salads, cooked food, sweets and fruits. It is delicios! And just in front of the store they sell the famous Swiss sausages! So buy something and go outside, sit on the stairs and enjoy the sun!

For what regards parking: all the downtown parking places are expensive. There are several parkings close to the center, but the price in 3.6 CHF/hour. So you can park at a place called Park+Ride Neufeld. It is the cheapest. The price is 2 CHF/hour. It is a 30 minutes walk from the Old City or you can take bus No.11 to the center.
Another option is to visit on Sunday. All the parkings are at half price!

Enjoy Bern!!!!

PS: visit the city on a sunny day and look for carnavals in Bern! They are magic!
